Of these three, it was the printing press that most profoundly reshaped the intellectual and cultural landscape of Europe. When Johannes Gutenberg introduced movable type in Mainz, Germany, around 1450, he set in motion a transformation that would fundamentally alter what people read, who could read it, and how writers approached their craft.
